Abstract

The study leveraged on the cooperative model to provide comprehensive support that will alleviate poverty among farmers. The study primarily focused on Kogi and Benue States of the North-Central region of Nigeria. The three Senatorial headquarters of each of Kogi and Benue States were purposively selected for the study samples. Similarly, a non-probability sampling was used to select the final respondents within the selected sample area. The major instrument of data collection in the study was questionnaire. Two hundred copies of questionnaire were administered in each of the sample area selected. There were 1,200 copies of questionnaire distributed in all, however 1,100 copies were correctly filled and returned. The method of data analysis for the study was percentages and descriptive statistics through the use of pie charts. Findings from the study showed that Agro-allied cooperative provides access to high-quality agricultural inputs and financing, improves farmers‘ skills and knowledge through educational programme focusing on modern agricultural techniques, enhance market access and integration into profitable value chains for cooperative members and enhances poverty alleviation and economic growth in Benue State and Kogi State, Nigeria. The study therefore recommends that the government should establish strong and reliable Agro-allied Cooperative societies through Public-Private Partnership in each of the zones to be supervised directly by the Government through the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to guard against mismanagement.
