Abstract

The effect of underwriting practices on the financial performance of insurance firms in Nigeria was empirically examined in this study. Between 2014 and 2023, a sample of fifteen (15) listed insurance firms was investigated using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and panel Ordinary Least Squares regression. The various analyses were used to investigate the connection between the financial performance of listed insurance firms in Nigeria and underwriting practices. The empirical findings showed that insurance premium, underwriting profit and firm size does not substantially impact on the financial performance of Nigeria's listed insurance firms. We recommend that proper management of underwriting profit, gross premium and firm size should be carried out so that they enhance the insurance firms‘ financial performance. Also, there is need for a strategy to manage underwriting practices in an optimal manner among insurance firms.
